Preface

This section contains data related to organisations engaged in the communication activity, rendering communication services (operators of communication) and to the development of their material and technical basis (data of Minkomsvyaz' of Russia).

Operator of communication is a legal entity or individual entrepreneurs rendering communication services on the basis of a lincence.

Communication services are defined as an activity comprising reception, handling, transfer and delivery of mail or messages by electric communication means.

Communication services revenues are the revenues from communication services rendered during the reference period: cash received by cash-desks of organisations and amounts charged for the services rendered.

Communication means - hardware and software used to create, receive, process, store, transfer, deliver electric messages and postal dispatches and to ensure operation of communication network.

Communication network - technological system comprised of communication means and lines intended for transmission of various information: postal and telegraph messages, phone connection, data, radio broadcasting and TV programs, etc.

General-purpose communication network intended for market service of communication for any user and customer.

Postal communication - reception, handling, transportation and delivery of postal mailings, and also dispatch, delivery and distribution of the periodical press, money transfer (remittances).

Postal dispatch - written correspodents, parcels, direct postal containers: written correspodents - ordinary and registered letters, postcards, wrappers and small packages; postal remittances - money sent in the framework of postal remittance service.

EMS dispatch - postal dispatch, reception, processing, transmission and delivery by the express post system "EMS": internal - at the territory of the Russian Federation; international - carried out according to the Acts of the Universal Post Union.

Electric communication is the transmission and reception of symbols, signals, written text, images and sounds or messages of any kind by wire, radio, optical or other electro-magnetic systems

Mounted capacity - a value which characterizes technological possibilities of a communication operator to render service on electro-communication, connections and traffic transmission and is measured by the technical capacity of equipment implemented in the operator's network.

Тelephone apparatuses - main and additional (parallel) switched on the public network, apparatuses of phone departmental stations of establishments connected with this network and public phones booths of all kinds which render service of local, intercities and international communication.

Main telephone sets are general-purpose telephones apparatus keeping independent numbers at the public telephone station, as well as telephones with a shared line intended for general purposes.

Supplementary (parallel) telephone sets - apparatus switched to the main line and not having a separate phone number.

Home telephone sets - phone apparatus installed in apartments (living houses).

Mobile communication - complex of technical means (radio and communication equipment, communication lines and structures), which render communication facilities for mobile subscribers and subscribers of public telephone network.

Cellular communication is a mobile system of radio telephone communication.

Coverage of population by TV and radio broadcasting is compiled as the ratio of the number of citizens having possibilities to receive TV and radio programs to the total population size of the Russian Federation.
