The workshop on modernization of official statistics, jointly organized by UNECE, Rosstat and EFTA, was held in Nizhny Novgorod on June 10-12.

The workshop was built on the success of the High Level Seminar on the Modernization of Statistical Production and Services, held in St Petersburg in October 2012, which attracted senior managers from statistical organizations around the world.

The workshop ensured that managers and specialists of national statistical organizations from CIS countries and Mongolia have up to date information on new standards and modernization initiatives. It will assist them to build networks within and beyond the region, allowing them to more fully share the benefits of global innovations in this area.

Topics covered during the workshop are as follows:

     • Introduction to the Generic Statistical Business Process Model (GSBPM), the Generic Statistical Information Model (GSIM) and the work of the High-Level Group for the Modernization of Statistical Production and Services;

     • Development of the Common Statistical Production Architecture;

     • Experiences of implementing production standards in practice – case studies from participating countries;

     • Standards for data transmission – Statistical Data and Metadata exchange (SDMX) and the Data Documentation Initiative (DDI);

     • Implementing SDMX and DDI standards in practice;

     • How to move forward with statistical modernization in beneficiary countries, supporting the outcomes of recent Global Assessments of national statistical systems and the related UN Development Account project on Strengthening national capacity for the sustainable development of statistics.
